How SNAP works

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) is a valuable resource for individuals and families who need help purchasing food.

It’s designed to provide financial support to eligible households, helping to ensure access to nutritious meals.

Follow the simple steps below to apply:

  1. Submission: You can apply for SNAP benefits online, by mail, or in person at a local office.
  2. Verification Process: After submitting your application, you may be required to provide additional documentation or participate in an interview to verify your eligibility.
  3. Decision: Within 30 days, you should receive a decision regarding your application. This will be communicated through a mailed letter.
  4. Receiving Benefits: If approved, an Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) card will be sent to you. This card is loaded with funds each month, which can be used to purchase food at authorized retailers.
  5. Renewal: To continue receiving benefits, most recipients are required to renew their SNAP application every six months. This involves submitting updated forms to confirm ongoing eligibility.

If you’re in urgent need of financial assistance they might treat your application as a priority and aim to respond within 7 days, providing you with SNAP benefits for 1-2 months as quickly as possible.

However, they still require the rest of your documents and may need to conduct an interview to ensure you continue receiving SNAP benefits.

Your household will qualify for emergency processing if it:

  • Earns less than $150 a month and has less than $100 in savings, or
  • Has combined housing and utility expenses that exceed your total income and savings before taxes, or
  • Consists of migrant or seasonal farmworkers.

If you require additional food assistance

You can dial 1-800-221-5689 or visit the website for more information.

Items you can purchase with your EBT card include:

  • Fresh fruits and vegetables;
  • Meat, poultry, and fish;
  • Dairy products;
  • Bread and cereals;
  • Snack foods and non-alcoholic drinks;
  • Seeds and plants for growing your own food.

However, you cannot use SNAP benefits to buy:

  • Alcoholic beverages, cigarettes, or tobacco;
  • Vitamins, medicines, and supplements. Items with a Supplement Facts label are considered supplements and are not eligible for SNAP purchase;
  • Live animals, except for shellfish, fish out of water, and animals that have been slaughtered before you pick them up from the store;
  • Hot foods at the point of sale;
  • Non-food items such as pet food, cleaning supplies, household items, hygiene products, and cosmetics.

Eligibility

SNAP eligibility is based on your household’s monthly income, which includes earnings from employment, cash assistance, Social Security, unemployment benefits, and child support.

Households with members aged 60 or above, or with disabilities, may have higher income limits.

Non-U.S. citizens can also apply without affecting their immigration status. Your SNAP household includes those you share and prepare most meals with, such as your spouse or children under 22.

The table below shows the maximum monthly income and potential SNAP benefits for different household sizes:

Household Size Maximum Monthly Income Potential Monthly SNAP Benefits
1 $2,430 $291
2 $3,287 $535
3 $4,144 $766
4 $5,000 $973
5 $5,857 $1,155
6 $6,714 $1,386
7 $7,570 $1,532
Each additional person + $857 + $219

*These figures represent the maximum possible SNAP benefits. Your actual benefits will depend on your income and expenses. After applying, your eligibility and benefit amount will be determined based on your circumstances.

The federal government sets the income thresholds for SNAP eligibility. The guidelines provided are current as of October 1, 2023.

Additional Eligibility Criteria for Students

Full-time or half-time students in college, university, or trade school generally do not qualify for SNAP.

To be eligible as a half-time or more enrolled student, you must meet one of the following criteria:

Parenting a young child:

  • Caring for a child under 6 years old; or
  • Caring for a child aged 6 to 11 without childcare and working 20 hours a week or participating in work-study; or
  • A single parent caring for a child under 12 years old.

Working or unable to work:

  • Participating in a work-study program; or

Your school determines the definition of “half-time” based on your course load. Check with your institution for your status.

Part-time students attending less than half-time do not have additional SNAP eligibility requirements.
